England Woodland Burial Parks

Woodland Hall
The Woodland Hall is the ceremonial heart of the site and this is reflected in its sculpted upturned roof.

The solid external walls facing the courtyard mask the interior. When participants pass from the courtyard into the hall through twin double doors, both the power of the space and the next gateways reveal themselves.

The three glazed walls allow the inner and outer landscapes to merge with one another. The double glass doors clearly mark the gateway to the grave, whilst the glazed covered atrium above appears as a gateway to the beyond.

This juxtaposition of gateways invites the realisation that this is the time and place for the separation between love and the body it has known. The body will continue its journey to the grave, whilst love remains within the eternal gateway of the heart.

This is a truly devastating moment which the building gently holds in its embrace.
